Laboratory C417 at FESB, University of Split has transformed into ‘Lean Learning Factory’ through different research projects:
- EU-TEMPUS MAS-PLM
- DAAD NIL
- EU-LDV LOPEC
- HRZZ INSENT
- UKF DEPROCIM
The following activities take place Within the Lean Learning Factory at FESB:
- EDUCATION
- IMPLEMENTATION OF LEAN AND GREEN CONCEPTS IN THE ECONOMY
- SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
PROCESS IMPROVEMENT @ LF
Learning Factory offers support, training and projects for process improvement, based on simulation and optimization of production system, Lean management tools, etc. It offers set of methods and tools from Lean management, simulation software, software for modelling and optimization of production systems and didactic games. The following activities take place within Learning Factory at Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture: education, implementation of lean and green concepts in economy and scientific research activities.

IALF MEMBER
The development of the Learning Factory has been taking place at FESB for seven years and it is a member of the world International Association of Learning Factories (IALF). Activities take place within the Factory in the field of education (students and lifelong), scientific research and cooperation with economy. The research results were published at the European Learning Factories conference. Learning Factory at FESB also participated in the European NIL Network project Innovative Learning Factories developed as laboratories for CAD/CAM, lean methods, adaptive technologies (scanning, 3D printing), digitalization of products and production and conventional (gearbox) and intelligent (cart vehicle) assembly. LF at FESB has international cooperation with a number of European universities (universities from Japan, South Korea and Brazil).
The Lean typology of Learning Factory at FESB was determined based on the typology defined by IALF. The picture on the right represents features and characteristic of Learning Factory.
PROCESS IMPROVEMENT @ LF
LF @ FESB offers support, training and projects for process improvement, based on simulation and optimization of production system, Lean management tools, etc. It offers set of methods and tools from Lean management, simulation software, software for modelling and optimization of production systems and didactic games.
One of the main tasks within the Learning Factory was to balance the existing assembly line with the goalachievements of higher utilization of workers, synchronization of runtime durationindividual operations, as much as possible, with existing restrictions.
ASSEMBLY LINE BALANCING
LIFELONG LEARNING @ FESB
The primary task is the education of undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students at FESB, as well as visiting students (especially on the ERASMUS program):
- Lectures at undergraduate studies: study of work and time, business organization system
- Bachelor and master's thesis
- Lectures at graduate studies: production technologies, design, planning and optimization of production systems
- Lectures at postgraduate studies, courses Modeling and simulation
- Doctoral dissertations
- Lectures at the professional study: Production planning and management
RAPID PROTOTYPING @ LF
LF @ FESB offers support in research and development of a new product, emphasizing rapid prototyping.
It is equipped with all necessary software and hardware: 3D scanner, 3D printer, CAD/CAM software, PLM software, simulation software, software for modelling and optimization of production systems, etc.

R&D @ LF: INDUSTRY 5.0
LF @ FESB is keeping pace with State-of-the-Art research, especially with research on newest cyber-physical industrial platforms.
At the moment, work-stations are upgrading with Windows tablets, RFID tracking system, and customized solutions for assembly line and manipulator (based on PLC, Arduino and/or Raspberry Pie).
